Kunun Aya ,also known as Ofio Milk, is a nutritious and refreshing drink, made with Tiger nuts.
Tiger nuts are actually small tubers which are abundant in Northern Nigeria and known as ”ofio”, ” aki hausa” or ”Erunsha”.
It has lots of health benefits and the milk can be used as a substitute for the regular cow’s milk.
Kunun Aya (Tiger nuts Milk) is native to the Hausas’ in Nigeria and quite easy to prepare.
**Please Click here to see some of the health benefits of Tiger nuts (ofio nuts)**
You’ll need:
– 200gram Tiger nuts (Ofio/ aki hausa)
– 600 to 700ml cool water
– 1 teaspoon grated Ginger (optional)
– Honey or sugar (to taste)(optional)
Hint: Coconut and Dates (dabino/dabinu) is also added to Kunun Aya
Preparation:
– If you are using dried tiger nuts, wash and soak in water for 24 hours until the nuts are well hydrated (change the water from time to time, so that it doesn’t ferment).
If you’re using fresh tiger nuts, skip the soaking process.
– Pour out the water, rinse the nuts and place in a blender.
-Add the ginger and the cool water and blend thoroughly.
(the ginger is optional, but I add it for extra benefits)
– Pour through a sieve with a tight mesh and let the milk strain out.
Chill in the refrigerator, sweeten with honey or sugar and enjoy.
Tip: when left for some hours the milk will separate from the fat. But that’s not a problem. Simply mix together and enjoy.
**In Spain, Tiger nut Milk is known as Horchata de chufas**

Thanks Blesbles, with this recipe I got about 600ml of tiger nuts milk more or less-
I just tried the recipe again with dates and coconut and it was also delicious.
So for 1 litre of tigernut milk you’ll need about 400grams tigernuts, 1 large coconut and 1 cup pitted dates
note: you can also reblend the ingredients with more water to get as much milk from them as possible
-enjoy.
thank you ma

You’re welcome Ofa , glad to be of help:)
Hi Nky,I've been following your recipes and I love it soo much, ure a genious mwah! With respect to this kunun aya I use the dry nut because the fresh nut has so many bad ones which are sour nd can change the taste of the milk, but wen you use the dry one as soon as you put it in water all the bad ones float to d top, let me share my recipe for those who are diabetic nd dnt take sugar. I use just tiger nuts(aya) & dry dates(dabino) . Soak both tiger nuts and dates(remove the seed of d dates, wash and soak with enough water to cover d dates in a seperate bowl) for 24 hours or overnight after which you'll pour out the water of d tiger nuts nd pound it slightly in a mortar to remove dirt nd sand that comes with d nuts, wash properly nd blend it together with d dates, squeez out the milk using a cheese cloth, pour the shaft into a bowl mix wit water and sieve again repeat process till the milk is completely out. Refrigirate & serve chilled or add ice rocks to it.NB- you can add other ingredients like ginger, cloves(kanamfari) nd coconut. No need for addintional sugar coz the date serves as the sweetener I hope my post is helpful.
Thanks Rukky , it was very informative 🙂

Hi deari, this is kunun aya; the regular one is made from millet. I'll be posting the recipe soon.
Hey dear..i want to use the fresh nut but my fear is wont it damage d blade of my blender?
No dear, it won't destroy the blades, you can cut it into bits before grinding it.
Hi Nky, I love the recipe on tiger nut preparation. I want to know if you have used the milk to cook rice just like coconut rice, where you use the milk from the coconut to cook rice. Can it work in the case of tiger nut milk?
Thanks dearie, I have never tried it, but you just gave me a new idea, I might give it a try, you never know, this might be the next coconut rice alternative.Do let me know if you try it out 🙂
Ok
I tried it with rice nd I couldn't eat it… Yuck
Thanks for updating dearie, you just saved me from doing that experiment, so tiger nuts rice is a no no 🙂

Thanks for sharing. Will try it out soon.
You're welcome hun , expecting your feedback 🙂
Nice one Nky..sure going to try it…but to much of ofio can lead to cough, hope you know…..that posh mom
Exactly dearie, too much of everything is bad. It's just like when you eat too much coconut, you can also get itchy throat or cough. Taking the milk is a better way of taking advantage of the benefits of these nuts.
Hi Nky, I never knew these nuts are that nutritious. I ll surely try making the milk. Thanks for the recipe and all the other food recipes. God bless. From your biggest fan, Yinka.
Hi Yinka, good to hear from you hun, I'll be expecting your feedback 🙂
I'm sure going to try it out. I also love ginger and will add some too. Thanks for this.
you're welcome dearie 🙂
